History of Golf
Golf - as we know and love it today - has its roots in Scotland. The title of “The Home of Golf” is given to St Andrews, a golf course located on Scotland’s east coast, and the sport in the quaint Scottish town can be traced back to 1552. Golfers in St Andrews adapted and progressed the game from rules obtained from “the gentlemen of Leith”, who had established their own members' club in 1744. Subsequently, the world’s first official golf course was constructed at St Andrews in 1764, and King William IV honoured the club with the title “Royal and Ancient,” which is still known today.
In the early days of golf in Scotland, players used hand-crafted wooden clubs and balls made of feathers wrapped in a stitched horse hide. Golf soon crossed the border from Scotland to England, and the first course outside Scotland was Royal Blackheath on the outskirts of London. As the British Empire expanded, colonialists took golf with them.
The first golf course outside of the British Isles was established in Bangalore, India, with others quickly following in Ireland, Canada, South Africa, the United States, and Hong Kong. The pioneers of golf in Britain were the likes of Tom Morris and Willie Park, two men synonymous with the progression and development of the game and its associated equipment. However, the establishment of the United States Golf Association in 1894 brought about a mass interest in golf, and people throughout the United States became interested in the game for the first time.
Today, the American-based PGA Tour is widely seen as the pinnacle of the sport, with most of the world’s best players competing on the Tour each week. However, the emergence of the Saudi-funded LIV Golf Tour has provided professionals with an alternative tour with big purses. It promises to change the golf hierarchy in years to come.
Rules of Golf
Golf is a relatively complex game with extensive rules and regulations. That said, you can easily grasp the basic rules of golf if you wish to tune into the game and place bets on the big tournaments at Stake.com.
Fundamentally, golf is an individual sport in which players compete against other players in the field. It’s unique in that the player with the lowest - not the highest - score at the end of a round wins.
Golf is played on a course with 18 holes. Each hole is given a “par,” indicating how many shots a player should attempt to take to score well. For instance, on a par 4, players should try to get the ball into the hole in four shots or fewer. The total par of the course is added up and given as a total number - usually in the region of 70-75. Players seek to shoot scores that are “under” par for their round, and the winning golfer is the player with the lowest score at the end of the round.
Most golf tournaments follow this method - known as stroke play - and consist of 3-4 rounds, meaning that a player’s total score over the 3-4 rounds will be added up. Ultimately, the winner will have the lowest score over the 3-4 rounds.
Some golf tournaments follow a match-play format, in which players seek to beat their competitors on each individual hole, as opposed to stroke play, where every shot matters. But most golf competitions throughout the season follow the stroke play format, which is why we have explained it in detail here.
Major Golf Tournaments in 2025
Here are some of the biggest golf tournaments to look forward to in 2025:
The Masters - Augusta National Golf Club, Georgia, USA (10-13 April, 2025)
The most prestigious tournament on the golf calendar is the US Masters , which takes place at Augusta National in Georgia in April of each year. The winner of the Masters receives a Green Jacket – the most sought-after prize in all of golf. It’s been held since 1934 at the private members club, which features a challenging course surrounded by picturesque scenery.
Scottie Scheffler won the 2024 Masters, becoming the fourth-youngest two-time winner and the first player since Tiger Woods in 2001 to win the Masters and the Players Championship in the same year.
PGA Championship - Quail Hollow Golf Club, North Carolina, USA (11-18 May, 2025)
The PGA Championship has been held since 1934, making up one of the four major championships. Each year, a course is selected based on difficulty, with organisers ensuring that the greens are fast and the rough makes it difficult for players to hit the fairways.
Xander Schauffele won the Championship in 2024, adding to his list of awards which includes an Olympic gold medal. The 2025 PGA Championship will be held at Quail Hollow Golf Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The US Open - Oakmont Country Club, Pennsylvania, USA (12-16 June, 2025)
The US Open has been held annually since 1895, and it’s one of the most prestigious events on the golf calendar. As an open, any golfer can enter the competition, but only the very best in the world have a hope of lifting the trophy. The open nature of the tournament adds some extra unpredictability and excitement, especially in the early stages.
In 2024, the US Open was won by Bryson DeChambeau, his second US Open title. The 2025 US Open will be held at the Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania. The tournament features big prize pools, with last year offering a share of more than $20 million to players taking part.
The Open - Royal Portrush, Northern Ireland, UK (17-20 July 2025)
The Open , also known as the British Open, is one of the oldest golf tournaments in the world. It was first held in 1860, and it’s arguably the most prestigious event in golf. The tournament takes place on notoriously challenging courses across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The 153rd event will take place at Royal Portrush in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
In 2024, there were top ten finishes for Europeans Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood, Victor Hovland, Antoine Rozner, Sepp Straka, and Alex Fitzpatrick, who all hoped to do well at Royal Troon this summer. In the end, Xander the Great! Schauffele won the British Open for his 2nd major in 2024.
PGA Tour and Tournaments
As mentioned, the PGA Tour is the most prestigious golf tour on the planet, with its signature event being the PGA Championship, which is one of golf’s four major tournaments. The other three are The Masters - played annually at the stunning Augusta National golf course in Georgia - and the US and British Opens.
A golfer’s success is dependent on how many significant tournaments they win, with Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods regarded as the finest players of all time, with 18 and 15 majors, respectively.
Aside from the majors, every Tour has a calendar of events throughout the year, and professional players can decide which Tour they wish to qualify for. In addition to the prestigious PGA Tour of America, there is also the European Tour and the recently established LIV Tour, which both attract some of the biggest names in golf.
You can bet on all of the big golf tournaments at Stake.com, and we explain some of your golf betting options below.
How to Bet on Golf & Betting Options
Although there are team tournaments on the calendar, golf is primarily an individual sport. Discover the main golf betting options and popular golf betting markets below, or learn more with our golf betting guide !
Tournament Winner (Outright)
The easiest way to bet on golf at Stake.com is to pick the outright winner of an upcoming tournament. Given that there are usually more than 100 players on the field for each golf event, it might seem difficult at first to pick a winner! This is why each-way golf bets are common in golf, enabling you to select a player that you think will finish in the top 5 or top 6 of a specific tournament. Either way, picking a tournament winner is a great way to cheer on your favourite players at an upcoming golf tournament.
Matchplay Winner (Head-to-Head)
Instead of choosing which player you think will win a tournament, you can bet on one player to beat another in the field as a form of head-to-head betting or head matchup. So, if Justin Thomas and Cam Smith are both in the field for an upcoming major, you can back Thomas to finish with a better score than Smith, for instance. You will win your head-to-head bet if he shoots a better score than his competitor.
Other popular golf bets include:
Futures bets: Also known as outrights , you can select which player you think will win a big tournament in the future, or perhaps you could choose the FedEx Cup winner.
Prop bets : In most golf tournaments, you can bet on things like hole-in-ones, the number of birdies, or even which player will hit the longest drive. These are all known as golf prop bets and aren’t tied to the tournament’s eventual winner.
